Liberty

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." - Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776.


Liberty is an unalienable right because it cannot be taken from you. You can be held at gunpoint or imprisoned, subjected to unjust laws of every kind, and you still have liberty.  Your choices have been restricted, but they can never be completely taken from you so long as you are alive and able to choose. The man with a gun is attempting to trick you into believing that he has taken liberty from you, and he may even believe that he has, but if you know the truth about liberty then you have more power than the gunman. The gunman's power ends when his gun is taken from him, but yours can never be taken from you.


Of course, the flip side of having an unalienable right of Liberty is that you are always responsible, to a greater or lesser degree, for the choices you do make. You can't wriggle out of a bad decision by saying you didn't have a choice. It's not true. The choice was yours to make, even if you didn't like the options you had available to you. You are ultimately responsible for how you decide to use your liberty.  Unalienable rights bear unalienable responsibilities.
