Charles Darwin's Origin of the Species generated an unintended consequence, and I'm not talking about the impact it may or may not have had on people's faith lives. It was his law of natural selection - that nature weeds out the weak and favors the members of the species that reproduce - which has been the seed of a great deal of evil in our world and gave rise to the current mindset that only those who are "fit" as human beings should be allowed to reproduce. I think Darwin would be appalled at how this simple premise has been so badly misapplied.
Eugenics began as just such a movement to "cleanse" the human gene pool of those who were unworthy of passing down their genes. The goal was to eradicate those who were poor, black, ill, or genetically deformed. Planned Parenthood sprang up from these roots, spreading its seeds of evil throughout the United States and across the globe. Hitler adopted a program of eugenics and slaughtered 6 million Jews and 5 million Christians all in the name of trying to rid the species of the unnecessary, unproductive, unwanted.
Abortion and birth control have spread to every continent, infected every nation, and the results are devastating. There are fewer children in the world today than there have ever been in human history in terms of percentage compared to adults. In Japan, for every 100 people only 13 of them are children, and most of those children are male. Russia and Germany have only 15 children for every 100 adults. That's not nearly enough hands to help care for all of those who are aging. In China, it's only a little better. Their one child policy has ended the life of so many children that only 16 out of every 100 people is a child. In the U.S., largely thanks to immigration both legal and illegal, the number is 20. The average child alive now can expect to be responsible for the care of no fewer than 5 elderly people at some point in his or her life. In Brazil, the number is 24 out of every 100 people. In India, it's 31 out of every 100 people, a much healthier number than America but still not the rates you'd hope to see for a healthy future. In Pakistan, it's 35 out of every 100 people. Nigeria's rates are much, much healthier and their survival virtually ensured with 44 out of every 100 people being a child. (Numbers provided by the Boston Review in a Tweet this morning)
The Eugenics movement forgot one very important thing in the middle of their narrow-minded focus on "cleansing" the gene pool. Darwin's law of natural selection applies to societies, too, not just to individuals. The society that refuses to reproduce will one day be replaced by one that does not. Judging by the numbers, I'd suggest that we begin to focus on learning Pakistani, and to learn Hausa, Kanuri, Yoruba, Bassa, and other languages of Nigeria. This is where the greatest number of children are located, and this is where the human race will be centered in the future.
America and Russia spent a great many years fighting a cold war, wondering who would conquer whom, tiptoeing around World War III. Their greatest fear was that a nuclear bomb would go off and destroy most of the world. It seems they were a little late to the party. Abortion and Birth control have done what no atomic or nuclear bomb ever dreamed of doing. It is silently killing nations, wiping out race after race. Sadly, the human race largely hasn't caught on yet, and the killing continues.
