All Souls Day and the Mercy of Purgatory

According to Catholic teaching, there is a place for souls who, although forgiven their sins, failed to make reparations for them while living. This place is called purgatory. It is a place of cleansing, and the souls that live here are in desperate need of our prayers. Although they have hope because they know that when the time of their suffering is over they will join the rest of the saints in heaven, they suffer greatly because they are kept apart from God while their souls are being purged. If this seems a cruel thing to do, purgatory is actually a great mercy. Standing in the pure light of God's presence would be a perpetually painful experience if the soul were not purged of all the baggage from their sins, so God grants them the space needed to get themselves fully prepared for what is to come.

Today is All Soul's Day. Today, the Church Militant (all living members of the Church) join together with the Church Triumphant (those souls who have made it to heaven) to pray for the souls whose fate is unknown and especially for the Church Suffering (those souls who are languishing in Purgatory). Since the souls in purgatory cannot pray for either themselves or for other souls who are in purgatory, they rely on the members of the Church militant to offer prayers for their sake.

When we are willing to offer up prayers for the souls of the departed, we gain unseen friends in heaven. These people will, in turn, bring our prayers to the attention of the Lord and will offer us special aid in our times of need. It is an act of charity to pray for the souls of the dead, especially those souls trapped in purgatory.

Prayer to Our Suffering Savior for the Holy Souls in Purgatory

O most sweet Jesus, through the bloody sweat which Thou didst suffer in the Garden of Gethsemane, have mercy on these Blessed Souls. Have mercy on them.
R. Have mercy on them, O Lord.

O most sweet Jesus, through the pains which Thou didst suffer during Thy most cruel scourging, have mercy on them.
R. Have mercy on them, O Lord.

O most sweet Jesus, through the pains which Thou didst suffer in Thy most painful crowning with thorns, have mercy on them.
R. Have mercy on them, O Lord.

O most sweet Jesus, through the pains which Thou didst suffer in carrying Thy cross to Calvary, have mercy on them.
R. Have mercy on them, O Lord.

O most sweet Jesus, through the pains which Thou didst suffer during Thy most cruel Crucifixion, have mercy on them.
R. Have mercy on them, O Lord.

O most sweet Jesus, through the pains which Thou didst suffer in Thy most bitter agony on the Cross, have mercy on them.
R. Have mercy on them, O Lord.

O most sweet Jesus, through the immense pain which Thou didst suffer in breathing forth Thy Blessed Soul, have mercy on them.
R. Have mercy on them, O Lord.

Blessed Souls, I have prayed for thee; I entreat thee, who are so dear to God, and who are secure of never losing Him, to pray for me a miserable sinner, who is in danger of being damned, and of losing God forever. Amen.
